Final Handover

During the final consult with Ivan last week, I set up a meeting for today to hand over the final designs on a CD. This includes packaged folders of all the documents, illustrations and print-ready PDFs.

Unfortunately Ivan could not make it for the hand over meeting, and I had already made plans for after the hand over. I asked if I could possibly leave the CD with someone, Desire the Industrial Design secretary, who was also not there.

I ended up leaving the CD in one of the office pigeon holes.

Not exactly the hand over I was expecting, definitely not the smoothest one either. But at least I have handed over the files and that is the important part. I will check with Ivan a bit later to make sure he has received the CD.

Project Reflection

I was really quite wary of this project to begin with, working with communities and clients can be really frustrating – especially when they do not know what it is that they want/need.

But the briefing with Farm This City, Itumeleng and Ivan when quite well, everyone seemed to have a plan and an idea of what they needed done. At first it was a bit disheartening when none of my logo designs were working, but once I got that element sort everything else went a lot smoother.

The booklet design leeched so much of my time from this project – I was worried I would not be able to complete any of the other deliverable on time. It was very motivating to get positive feedback from the client and my lecturer, who both seemed to think the design work was going well and heading in the right direction (I think).

Overall the project went relatively well, my client was easy to communicate with and did not make any crazy demands. He seems to like the work I have done and that is ultimately the purpose of this project – to work effectively with a client, find solutions to their real-world problem & work with them to cater the solutions to their needs/wants. I think by this definition I have met all the criteria.

Looking back over the course of this project, I did eventually enjoy the work and I am quite happy with the designs I have produced. I am also excited to see my solutions being used! As always, I hope whoever uses my designs finds them practical and pleasant.

Basic Presentation Template Completed

I have now completed all of the deliverables for this project!

The presentation is based on the layout of the booklet – it looks alright, I’m not super happy with the final result. It’s quite difficult doing a rough layout when I am not sure at all of how Ivan will use the presentation. In other words, I don’t know what the content will be so I can’t fully prepare for it.

Proof Printing

I printed out the brochure and the label on my home printer and it seems just fine. The front and back of the brochure did not line up exactly – but that is my printer’s fault (as usual).

The label looks good, I can easily read the type and the layout seems to work alright.

Fantastic! I am 90% done with this project –  I just need to make the presentation template and wrap up all the deliverables, burn it on a disk and hand it over.

  1. Logo Design – Done
  2. Beekeeping Guide Booklet – Done
  3. Brochure – Done
  4. Honey Jar Labels – Done
  5. Presentation Template – … getting there.

Honey Jar Business Card

Below are the honey jar labels I designed as a kind of business card. Instead of leaving an actual business card with potential sponsors he could given them a jar of his own “100% homegrown Jozi Honey”, with his details and such on the bottle.

The label would be printed on a clear vinyl sticker, 65mm x 130mm, it will wrap around the bottle but the delicious honey would still be visible inside.

I will print out the label to make sure it fits the generic honey jars Ivan uses to bottle his honey.

Completed Brochure Design

I have just completed the brochure design. I based it on the same style as the booklet and used the same visual elements, such as the pattern, basic grid and typeface.

I designed it so that each panel is a perfect square and two brochures can be printed on a single A3 page.

I will suggest that the brochure is printed on 180gsm matt paper, although a semi-gloss paper will also look fine.

I think I should do a test print of the booklet and brochure to see that all the elements are working alright. Hopefully my home printer will not mess it up too badly.

Final BeeHaven Booklet Design

I am finally done with the booklet design – yay!

I have made all the revisions and added content which Ivan asked for, such as: adding a cut-away view of the hive, a section of how to catch a swarm of bees as well as some changes to the content of the honey and beeswax harvesting section.

The final PDF document has colour bars, crop marks and a 3mm bleed.

I will suggest to Ivan that he prints the booklets on 120gsm matt paper.

Final Consult with Ivan

Just had my final consult with Ivan, we went through the booklet design and made a few revisions and touch-ups to the content. He is really happy with the overall look. We made some changes to the deliverables, instead of in-store advertising I will be making labels (vinyl stickers) for Ivan’s honey jars which will act as a business card. I will also be making a presentation template for him in InDesign and a Z-fold brochure for the BeeHaven hives.

New Deliverable:

  1. BeeHaven Brand Idenity
  2. Quick Beekeeping Guide Booklet
  3. Honey Jar Labels
  4. Z-Fold Brochure
  5. InDesign Presentation Template

The design work should go quickly now that the booklet is basically completed. The deadline for this project is on Monday the 9th of May (3 days to go). However, Ivan will only be in Johannesburg on Tuesday. I notified my lecturer and will hand over all the files to him on Tuesday.

Ivan has asked for the working files so that he can edit the content/layout if changes need to be made in future.
